Color: A variety of dark self colors, as dark blue-gray, dark or lighter grays and brindles,or the yellow, sandy red or red fawn with black mask and ears. A small amount of white on breast and toes allowed, but the less the better.

Coat: The most common color is a dark blue-grey, although other colors are possible. The coat is rough, medium-length and should not feel wooly.
Character: This dog is not overly watchful and is gentle, noble, sensible, and intelligent.
Temperament: This breed gets along fine with similar dogs and children. It sometimes has difficulty controlling its hunting instincts around smaller animals.
Care: Regular brushing is required. In addition, the coat may need to be hand-plucked once or twice a year.
Training: The Deerhound learns quickly. Usually a simple request is all that is needed to produce the desired results.
Activity: This dog needs a great deal of exercise. It needs to run freely or trot alongside a bicycle to stay fit.
